 Flights & Handicaps

We will play our tournaments using The Flight Method. Each player will be placed in one of the following flights based on his/her handicap:

Flight 1   00.0 to 22.9

Flight 2  23.0 and higher

  1. We will then proceed with stroke play to determine the winners in each flight and using 80% of handicaps.
  2. The above ranges are based on the assumption that all male players will play to a maximum handicap of 36.4 and females will play to a maximum of 40.
  3. Your handicap will be established as of February 2002 based on the lower of your 2001 tournament average or your February 2002 NCGA handicap. Please see the Rules Section, for explanation.
  4. Players will be placed in a flight based on the lower of their 2001 tournament average or their February 2002 handicap. Please see the Rules Section, for exceptions.

Rules

Rule 1.0

To start the season, your handicap will be established by taking the lower of your 2001 tournament average, netted using course slopes and ratings or your NCGA handicap as of February 2002. Your tournament handicap will be adjusted monthly using the lower of your 2002 tournament average or your current monthly NCGA handicap.

You will be placed in a flight based on the lower of your 2001 tournament average, netted using course slopes and ratings or your NCGA handicap as of February 2002. You will remain in the same flight for the entire 2002 season. The exception to this rule is if after you have participated in at least two tournaments in 2002, you will be moved to a higher flight if your average handicap is shown to be at least two strokes lower than the low end of your flight. For example, if player A has a handicap of 21, then he/she will be in flight 2, however, if after two tournaments, his/her average handicap is 18 or lower, then, that player will be moved to flight 1 and all points in both flights will be adjusted accordingly.

Rule 2

This rule has become necessary because of inconsistencies in the interpretation of the rules and errors in the counting of one’s scores. There is no way for your playing partner to know if your mistake is intentional or not, therefore, you will be penalized for mistakes. The rule reads as follows: "If a competitor fails to state and/or record his/her correct score on any hole and does not correct his/her mistake before he/she plays a stroke from the next teeing ground, or, in the case of the last hole of the round, before he leaves the putting green, he/she shall be assessed a two stroke penalty." This assessment can be rendered and proven by any member of your group. The scrutiny and enforcement of this rule is obviously under the auspices of the members in your group and, as such, the final decision must be rendered by your group. It is embarrassing for everyone involved to have to correct someone’s score and it can create undue tension, so, let’s learn the rules, in particular, lost balls, out of bounds and lateral and regular water hazards and keep track of your score. On the PGA tour, if a player signs an incorrect scorecard, they are immediately disqualified from the tournament. Our rule is consistent with this and with USGA Rule Number 3-2 Failure to Hole Out. Just remember that the other members in your group are counting all of your strokes, even if you are not!

Rule 3

Payment for tournament fees are required by the due date.  If you payment is not postmarked by the due date, you will be accessed a $20 late fee.  You also run the risk of being bumped from the tournament by someone on the waiting list.

Skins Game

    1. The skins game tournament will take place in November 2002. You will be grouped with other players who are at a similar skill level.

    2. A maximum score of par is required to win a skin.
    3. If two or more players make the same winning score or if the maximum score is surpassed by all players on any hole, the skin rolls over to the next hole. In the event a foursome reaches the final hole with rolled over skins, the group should attempt to play it out by returning to the 1st hole. If this is improbable, then the players should have a putting contest to determine the winner.

Handicapped holes 1 through 6 shall be worth $12 per skin, handicapped holes 7 through 12 shall be worth $8 per skin and handicapped holes 13 through 18 will be worth $4 per skin. Total winnings are worth $144
