Match Play 2002 Definitions

Handicap Singles Match Play:

Each Match will be one round played over 18 holes.  In Handicap Match Play, the player that holes his/her ball in the fewest net score wins the hole.  The player who is leading when the lead is greater than the number of holes remaining to be played, wins the match.

In Handicap Match Play, the playing field is “leveled” with the allowance of 80% of your handicap during the Match.  Therefore, anything can happen in any match up.  Anyone who has played in a Match Play round or who participated in last year’s Match Play knows that it is intense and challenging, yet quite fun.  It is a whole new test of nerves and skill.

Other Important Bathroom Reading:

1.       This is a double elimination Match Play Tournament.  In other words, if you lose once, you can still win the tournament.  There will be six total winners this year.

2.       The first 32 players to sign up will be seeded into the Match Play Round Robin Sheet.  Seeds will be determined by January 2002 indexes.  In the event that there are fewer than 32 players, the lowest seeds will enjoy a “Bye” in Round 1.  The lower your index, the lower your seed.  Seeded play for Round 1 will be as follows:

Example:

#1 seed will play #32 seed.

#2 seed will play #31 seed.

#3 seed will play #30 seed, and so on.

3.       The higher-handicapped player will receive 80% of the difference between the NCGA Handicaps of the two players, rounded to the nearest whole number.

Example:

Player A has a handicap of 22.4

      Player B has a handicap of 13.7

Step 1:      22.4 – 13.7 = 8.7

Step 2:      80% of 8.7 = 6.96

Step 3:      6.96 rounded = 7

Step 4:      Player A gets 1 stroke on the 7 hardest holes.

If 80% of the difference between two player’s handicaps includes a .5 fraction, then round up.

Example:

80% of the difference between the two player’s handicaps is 2.5.  The higher handicap player would             receive 1 stroke on the 3 most difficult holes.

If the 80% difference between handicaps is greater than 18, then, one additional stroke will be added to the toughest holes until the difference is used up.

Example:

The 80% handicap difference between Player C & D is 24 strokes.  The higher handicapped player will receive two strokes each on the six toughest holes, and one each on the remaining 12.

4.    If the match is all square after 18 holes, the players shall commence with a sudden death playoff starting with the 1st hole.  The match will continue until a player wins a hole.  The handicaps shall be played in the same manner as described above.  If the holes played in sudden death are within the usual criteria as explained above, then strokes shall be given accordingly.  Obviously, the playoff holes will be played based on availability at the course that day.  The participating players will have to work out the logistics to determine a winner.  A putt-off may be an option.

5.       Important: Players will be responsible for scheduling where and when their matches are to be played. All match expiration dates are on a Monday for greater flexibility.  The participants must complete their match on or before the scheduled date.  The winner should take on the responsibility of entering the match play final score at the web site entry screen within a day after the match is decided.  If the match is not completed within the scheduled time, both players will forfeit.  This will all work out fine if we are all fair, responsible, considerate and don’t wait until the last minute.

6.       It is your responsibility to know the rules of Match Play.

7.       Entry fee is $48 and must be postmarked by (January 31, 2002). A late fee of $20 will apply.  Cash prizes (based on 32 players) will be as follows:

1st place (winner of Match 62)                                 $467

2nd place (loser of Match 62)                                   $330

3rd place (loser of Match 61)                                    $220

4th place (loser of Match 59)                                    $151
